FAQS

Can you give me a quote without a physical viewing?

During the COVID-19 pandemic it is becoming more common to do things virtually. With photographs, videos and descriptions we can give a rough estimate. However, a physical inspection and discussion of your requirements are needed and for us to give you a final accurate price.

Which colour scheme should I use? What wallpaper would look good?

We want you to love your results. Personal taste is always important so if you can’t decide on a colour or pattern of wallpaper there are lots of ways we can help you. In the first instance, we can talk through your ideas with our free no obligation consultation. We also offer a service whereby, using up to date photoshop software we can show you how your room will look with different colours or styles! Contact us now to find out more.

How soon can you do it?

The answer varies depending on demand. Usually we are booked at least two months in advance. Therefore, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible. We do however, offer a cancellation list or can sometimes squeeze in urgent jobs. So still get in touch to see if we can help.

Who provides the paint/materials?

Here at Baxter's Decorating Service, we can offer you trade quality paint for any needs or budget.  Materials can be sorted, delivered and then invoiced at the end of the job. In some circumstances, we allow the client to provide their own paint. However, if you choose this option, we cannot guarantee the finish.

Included in the labour cost is any filler, sandpaper, wallpaper paste and any other consumables under this umbrella. If requested, estimates for materials can be provided in the quote.

Are there any hidden costs?

We try to give fixed price quotes. This is usually the price you pay is an accurate reflection but are still estimates. If there are any extra costs that arise during the project, we will discuss this with you beforehand.

What payment methods do you accept?

We can accept most payment methods, including: Cash, Bank Transfer, Credit & Debit Card, Google & Apple Pay. Unfortunately we are unable to accept cheques at this time.

What if something goes wrong?

Rest assured, we carry full public liability insurance that covers us for a variety for any domestic and commercial work up to £5,000,000. Proof can be provided on the first meeting.

When do we pay?

We ask for a 20% deposit of the quoted price up front. The remaining amount is due on receipt of the invoice. This is usually at the end of the job, after any snags and when you are completely happy with the finish.

Do you clean up?

We always treat your home in a way we would want someone to treat our own home. We clean up after ourselves as we go and never leave a home without making sure we have cleaned any mess we have created. We provide sufficient dust sheets, polythene sheeting and tape to protect your carpets.

What is the quote process?

Once you get in touch, we will work out a time that works for you and our director, to visit and discuss any requirements. After this consultation, we aim to return a quote to you within 2 days. This will be a breakdown of the price, typically via email. It is then up to you if you would like to proceed with the work. If you do we will get you booked in at the next available date.

All quotes are absolutely free of charge and non-obligatory. They are also valid for one calendar month.

What’s the best way to get rid of nicotine wall and ceiling stains?

Start by washing the walls. You can make a good solution mixing white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and warm water. Applying paint directly over top of the remaining stains or odour will not cover them up.

You'll need to apply a good, solvent-based stain-blocking primer to prevent them from bleeding through the paint. We usually use Zinsser Bin.  Afterwards, we would put a normal vinyl matt paint over the top. Water based can be used but solvent based is better

What’s the best paint to use on skirting boards?

We recommend any paint designed for wood and metal, such as gloss, satin or eggshell.

Gloss will create a high sheen finish. It is known for its durability and therefore good for high traffic areas of your home or family homes. It is important to remember to pick a water based gloss as oil based gloss can discolour fast.

Satin creates a semi-gloss finish. This is somewhere between the matt finish eggshell will give you and the shiny finish gloss will give you. This compliments bold colours and maintains the colour for much longer. It also has the benefit of hiding imperfections well and being easy to clean.

Finally eggshell leaves a matt finish with very little to no sheen. It has become very popular in shabby chic interiors and is good for high traffic areas as it is easy to maintain and keep clean.

Can you paint radiators?

Yes. You can purchase radiator paint. However, you must wait for it to completely cool down before painting so that the paint doesn't blister. High quality oil paints as eggshell/ woodwork paint. Don’t put on too many coats as it will insulate the radiator and make it less effective.

Are cheap paint brushes okay to use?

You get what you pay for with brushes. Cheap brushes usually have stiff bristles, which cause streaking and visible brush. They will not provide a neat finish.

Is cheap paint okay to use?

As with paintbrushes, you get what you pay for. Cheap paint tends to require more coats and doesn’t last as long as the more premium brands. This means the money you save buying cheaper paint will likely cost you more in the long run.

Why is my caulk cracking and splitting?

Paint cracking over caulk is a common problem, even for decorators. There are several factors that can cause this issue.

The first thing to check is the paint. This can actually be the problem, rather than the caulk itself. Because of the newer chemical makeup of paints, they have lost a lot of its elasticity and now it dries a lot more brittle in contract/vinyl matts. Hence why 10 years ago it was a very rare problem.

Another reason could be that the caulk wasn’t 100% dry before applying the paint. Temperature also plays a part in the process as emulsion-based paints need a minimum temperature for a good film development. Be careful if you wet wipe the caulk to remove excess, as if it leaves too thin a bead, it will be more susceptible to cracking and splitting.

Why is my paint all tacky and not drying?

This is usually down to improper preparation, from lack of primer or a low quality one. Applying a second coat too soon can also cause this. A damp environment can affect drying time so be aware of cold weather and take poor ventilation and humidity into consideration.

Old paint can also be a cause especially as many people don't realise paint has an expiration date. While most latex paints have a shelf life of up to ten years the paint can go bad for a number of reasons. Such as improper storage or not being sealed properly.

Another reason paint may not dry properly is if your paint has not been mixed well enough so make sure you always prepare your paint as well as your walls.

Can a decorator help repair window frames that seem to be rotten?

Replacing window frames can become very expensive. Hiring a professional decorator to repair and repaint can save you the huge expense. Prevention really is cheaper than a cure. Timber frames used for windows can become rotten and cause serious damage if it's not kept on top of.

Can you use water-based paint over oil-based paint?

It is fundamental to prime the area before using water-based over oil-based paint. Preparing by sanding to sufficient key, then primer, then water based paint. Apply 1-2 coats of a water-based bonding primer. You will know the surface is adequately primed when there is no longer any of the former paint colour visible and there are no apparent imperfections or stains.
